The Imperial Star Artichoke An Artichoke Plant for Any Climate

The Imperial Star Artichoke adapts well to both warm and cold climates.  In severe cold winter climates after the plants first go dormant, I suggest covering with 1 foot rich mulch mixed with cured steer manure. This will generate bacteria decomposition and heat.  Then, cover securely with plastic. Some growers bury small christmas tree lights for added warmth. As long as the plants do not freeze solid, they should do just fine kept outdoors. The other choice is to dig up your artichokes and winter over indoors where they will not freeze. In this case, light and fluffy soil is needed for easy removal.
